7. Living Labs Reims, France

INVEST Bioeconomy & Environmental Innovation (BEI) Living Lab

Geographical Location: Reims, France
Hosted by University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne (URCA)

Short Description
The INVEST BEI Living Lab is emerging in Reims as a collaborative space where researchers, students, companies, public stakeholders and civil society actors work together to address bioeconomy regional challenges. A planned launch is foreseen in the last quarter of 2026, marking the beginning of structured activities and initial experimentation.
INVEST BEI Living Lab will focus on bioeconomy and environmental innovation. Students (engineers, developers, designers, agronomists and other profiles) and professionals (manufacturers, researchers, entrepreneurs, farmers and public actors) will join forces to tackle challenges related to sustainable agriculture, biomass recovery, biotechnologies, circular production systems and environmental resilience.
INVEST BEI Living Lab will be inspired by the BioEcoCamp hackathon initiative, coordinated by the URCA's innovation hub: PUI Innorem (see previous edition here: https://bioeco.camp/), which has brought together diverse actors around real problems expressed by companies and regional stakeholders. During the hackathon, interdisciplinary teams prototyped solutions over 48 hours, supported by academic expertise, technical platforms and innovation infrastructures.
Moving beyond the event-based format, the INVEST BEI Living Lab will extend this dynamic into a structured and continuous experimentation framework. Rather than stopping at prototypes or awards, selected projects will be accompanied through a coordinated follow-up phase. Research teams, companies, local authorities and civil society organisations will collaborate to refine solutions, test them in real-life environments and explore pathways for practical implementation and territorial deployment.
In 2026, this initiative will be opened to partners and participants from across the INVEST Alliance, adding a European dimension to local experimentation and fostering shared learning between regions. By creating continuity between ideation, experimentation and territorial implementation, the INVEST BEI Living Lab will act as a bridge between the INVEST Centre of Excellence, INVEST joint study programmes and INVEST territorial needs.
