3. Living Lab Larissa – Thessaly, Greece

3.1 Description of the area  

Larissa is the capital and largest city of the Thessaly region in Greece. It is also capital of the Larissa regional unit. It is a principal agricultural center and a national transport hub, linked by road and rail with the port of Volos, the cities of Thessaloniki and Athens. The municipality of Larissa has 162,591 inhabitants, while the regional unit of Larissa reached a population of 284,325 (in 2011). Municipality of Larissa controls many companies and organizations (such as the local water supply and sewerage company) that can promote regional sustainability and resiliency. Recent activities of these companies include the production of electric power by exploiting the solar energy and by burning the Biogas deriving from the Biological Cleaning and the XYTA (Sanitary Landfill) of the Municipality of Larissa.

  • Improve the quality of the information on disaster risk and regional resilience and promote a culture of prevention
  • Improve the decision making and management in the emergency phase 
  • Promote a stronger collaboration and coordination of urban authorities with all stakeholders and resources involved in emergency management at all administrative levels (national, regional, local)
  • Encourage social awareness and involvement
