The Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra hosted the Slovak Economic Association Meeting (SEAM) – the most important economics conference in Slovakia – on September 11–12, 2025.

The conference, supported by European Union funding, was one of the events held under the INVEST project, which also provides a platform for expert meetings within international scientific conferences. Thematically, it was linked to Work Package 6 – Circular Biobased Economy.

The event’s prestige was further highlighted by the participation of Johan F. M. Swinnen, Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute, who delivered one of the two keynote lectures. Professor Swinnen has close ties with our university – in 2014, the SUA awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contributions to food policy and research on global food security. In total, 160 active participants attended the conference and presented research results in several sections, including 2 plenary sessions and one plenary discussion.

In the INVEST section, the following contributions were presented:

  • Julien Vastenaekels: Foreclosing transformation: A critical analysis of power and exclusion in EU bioeconomy foresight
  • Dimitar Yakimov, Delyan Plachkov, Svetla Dimitrova, Ekaterina Arabska: Study on the Possibilities for Production of By-products from Plant Raw Material
  • Ema Lazorčáková, Jack Peerlings, Liesbeth Dries, Ján Pokrivčák: Energy import disruptions and transition to renewables
  • Jozef Gálik, Ema Lazorčáková: Use of renewable resources in mixed sectors

SEAM is a unique forum that provides space for the exchange of knowledge and experience between Slovak and international experts. It is not only an academic discussion – participants actively contribute to shaping Slovakia’s economic policy and bring new perspectives on global economic challenges. Hosting SEAM in Nitra once again confirms that our university and the city are becoming a natural center for professional discussions and major scientific events
